Trip to Nashville

April 8th, 2009 by lumpy-rochester

This summer, The Break Room is heading to Nashville on a little trip we’ll tell you about later. But while we’re there, there’s some shopping that I have to do.

Backstory:

A few years ago in college, I discovered this little-known country rock band called the Flying Burrito Bros. They appeared in the movie Gimme Shelter as one of the opening bands for the Stones @ Altamont. They also recorded a pretty version of Wild Horses (which you can listen to here.) The leader, Gram Parsons, lived fast and died young, with his body being stolen and burned @ Joshua Tree in California. There have been a few movies about him, most notably the documentary Fallen Angel: Gram Parsons and the Johnny Knoxville vehicle Grand Theft Parsons.

What really intrigued me, after the myth and music, was the damn suit he wore on the album covers! For example:

C’mon, how cool is that suit!? Although the guy that originally made them, Nudie Cohn, died in 1984, his store still thrives in California and has served celebs in country music such as Hank Williams and Porter Wagoner pictured here:

Nudies’ head designer Manuel, ended up designing clothes for Bob Dylan, Merle Haggard, and The Rolling Stones. He also designed the suits The Beatles wear on the cover of Sgt. Peppers. In the late 1980’s, Manuel opened shop in Nashville called Manuel Exclusive Clothier  - and that’s where I’m headed when the plane lands!

I can’t wait to rock me one of these suits!

If I get my own custom made, what should I put on it? I am partial to Gram’s suit!
